This Madonna and Child dates back to the early 17th century. It is one of the so-called Madonnas of Constantinople, which, in terms of iconography, imitated some aspects of Byzantine icons.
After the Turkish conquest of Constantinople, Eastern monks began to bring Eastern icons to the West starting in 1453.
This large oil on canvas painting comes with its original, partially restored frame, which is complimentary.
The dimensions of the painting are considerable: 103cmx70.5cm with the frame, and 90cmx57cm without.
It is an oil on canvas, probably from the Florentine school. It is characterized by the great expressive intensity and the volume and plasticity of the figures, as well as the quality of the hands and faces.
There is a tear in the background and to the right of the child, which has been repaired and pictorially restored. There are two small tears to the left, also in the background. There are also small pictorial restorations in some areas of the painting: on the back of the Child's hand and on the back of the Madonna's. The images of the Madonna and Child are almost intact. The canvas is stretched. The painting does not require cleaning.
