Charles Antoine Coypel was a member of a family of French painters. Noël Coypel (1628-1707) was its first great exponent. He was appointed court painter. Antoine was also a great painter in contact with Bernini.
Antoine Coypel (1661-1722) was the creator of the painting "Bacchus and Ariadne on the Island of Naxos." Two copies are known, one in the Philadelphia Museum of Art (USA), and the other in a Russian royal palace.
This painting, of extraordinary quality, could be a workshop replica, perhaps with the participation of Coypel himself.
It should be remembered that Charles Antoine Coypel (Paris 1694-1752) was also a pupil of his father Antoine.
Both Antoine and Charles Antoine held the title of first painter to the king of France.
