This is a wonderful Pietà from the late 15th or early 16th century.
The theme of the Pietà began to be explored in art in the 15th century, especially with the so-called Vesperbild, sculptures originating from Germany. In Italy, too, this theme began to enjoy great popularity between the 15th and 16th centuries, as evidenced by Michelangelo's magnificent Pietà.
The craquelure is very thick, and the style is proto-Renaissance, yet still linked to the late Gothic, as can be seen from the elegance of the figures depicted and the lines that compose them. The faces, especially those of the Madonna and Christ, are highly expressive.
The work is on canvas glued in ancient times on wood.
The measurements are 82.5cmx68cm with the frame and 73cmx58cm without.
The author is very close to the Lombard school of Bramantino, a Renaissance artist from Lombardy.
This artist also left various works on canvas.
