Ancient painting (17th century) from the circle of Philippe De Champaigne - Christ and the Angel

This painting is an oil on canvas from the 17th century, from the first half judging by the thick craquelure that characterizes the painted surface.

The painting measures 125cm x 107cm with the frame, and 115cm x 98cm without it. The frame is antique.

The painting depicts a biblical episode: Christ and the angel who eases his suffering in the Garden of Olives. The landscape is typically hilly, with an almost unreal atmosphere, where the two figures stand out with their brightest colors.
The poses and proportions of the characters are typically from Philippe de Champagne (1602-1674) and the skill with which everything is rendered indicates that the master who created this work was an artist very close to Champagne, perhaps himself.
