This is a large and fascinating landscape made in oil on canvas, provided with a magnificent restored eighteenth-century frame.
The author, a highly accomplished artist, is undoubtedly one of the Italianate Flemish landscape painters of the 17th century. The landscape exhibited here is strongly reminiscent of Italian landscapes, yet possesses a certain Nordic atmosphere.
The dimensions of the painting without the frame are 129cm x 91cm and with the frame they are 149cm x 111cm.
This work certainly dates to either the late 16th or early 17th century. This can be deduced from the rendering of the clouds and the rocky landscape in the background, which are still based on 16th-century models.
Craquelure is thick throughout this painting, which therefore hasn't undergone any significant intervention. The clouds are very interesting, with their play of light and shadow. To the left of the composition are some ruins and some figures with oxen.
The work was relined between the 18th and 19th centuries and does not require restoration. Shipping will be via courier and Mail Boxes.
