This wonderful painting depicts an episode often depicted by 17th- and 18th-century artists: the Judgment of Solomon. This episode from the Old Testament has a happy ending: King Solomon was entrusted with the task of identifying the true mother of the two mothers who were fighting over the child, and he ordered the child's body to be cut in half so that each mother would have a share. Solomon knew that only the true mother would reject this sentence, which she did. It was precisely because of the mother's desperation at such a judgment that she was recognized as the child's parent.
The painting presented here features a brush signature (see photo) on the base of the column. It appears to read "Coypel" in block letters. In any case, this work appears to be very similar to the works of Charles Antoine Coypel (1694-1752), who lived in France as the official painter at the court of King Louis XV.
In particular, this work takes up the master's classical or classicizing settings, in addition to the very expressive gestures of the characters and the very complex and rich draperies.
The dimensions are 106cm x 77cm and 117cm x 90.5cm with the frame. The frame dates back to the late 19th century and is included.
This is a painting of undoubted value.
The work has been relined and does not require restoration. It features many figures: the composition is truly crowded.
